It is built on the southeastern tip of the island in a windless bay which separates the island of Bourtzi in two.\u00a0It is a relatively new settlement, built in 1829 &#8211; 1830 on the site of the ancient city, on two hills situated at the edge of the sea. The ancient settlement was built in 800 BC.The large natural port of the modern city is ideal in shape and in location. The streets are narrow without any typical planning apart from few parts in the city.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; padding_bottom=&#8221;60&#8243; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_inner offset=&#8221;vc_col-lg-6 vc_col-md-6 vc_col-xs-12&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4>Skiathos&#8217; history<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"Ancient Greece\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ancient_Greece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ancient times<\/a>, the island played a minor role during the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Persian Wars\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persian_Wars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persian Wars<\/a>. In 480 BC, the fleet of the <a title=\"Persian Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persian_Empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persian<\/a> <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Xerxes I of Persia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xerxes_I_of_Persia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Xerxes<\/a> was hit by a storm and was badly damaged on the rocks of the Skiathos coast.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following this the Greek fleet blockaded the adjacent seas to prevent the Persians from invading the mainland and supplying provisions to the army facing the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"300 Spartans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/300_Spartans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">300 Spartans<\/a> defending the pass at <a title=\"Thermopylae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermopylae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thermopylae<\/a>. The Persian fleet was defeated there at <a title=\"Battle of Artemisium\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Artemisium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artemisium<\/a> and finally destroyed at the <a title=\"Battle of Salamis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Salamis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battle of Salamis<\/a> a year later. Skiathos remained in the <a title=\"Delian League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delian_League\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delian League<\/a> until it lost its independence. On the contrary, it is a combination of a village in Pelio and an island village, with neoclassical elements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Certainly, all these elements are influenced by the mentality, the preferences and the needs of the local people. The houses are small in their majority, built close to each other and with two floors. They are built of stone while their external walls are whitewashed. It was also influenced by the people of his island whose life-stories he recreated and enlivened in his writings. He was a perfect observer and student of human psychology and of the morals and manners of his time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His unparalleled, full of lyricism writing style gave birth to masterpieces of moral novels in modern Greece. As a result, his name reminds us of Skiathos immediately.
